England coach Steve Borthwick is adamant his side will use the pain of their narrow Rugby World Cup semi-final defeat to South Africa to “grow into something brilliant” moving forward esports
Heading into the clash as heavy underdogs, England executed their kick-heavy gameplan to perfection and impressed at the set-piece to stunningly lead the Springboks at half-time esports
However, South Africa’s much-vaunted ‘bomb squad’ came off the bench, started to dominate the scrum and the kicking of Handre Pollard led them to a gutsy 16-15 win esports
Borthwick’s troops far outperformed expectations in the semi-final and although he was devastated to come up just short on the big stage, the coach is convinced the experience will stand his young squad in great stead for the future esports
“The whole team performance was strong,” said Borthwick in his post-match press conference esports
“We’re disappointed esports
We came here with a plan to win the game but fell short esports
Not far but a little bit short and we’re desperately disappointed esports
“But the players should be incredibly proud esports
We had seven players 25 or under in our squad, which was the most of any semi-finalist esports
South Africa had one esports
“We have a great blend in the squad and there’s lots to take going forward esports
We put ourselves in a position to win a semi-final against the reigning world champs and world No 1 esports
“In adversity, there is normally a seed in there that will grow into something brilliant esports
It’s too early to find that seed now but we’ll make sure we find it esports
We’ll take what we’ve gone through tonight, grab it and make sure it makes us stronger in the future esports
”England were narrowly defeated in Paris (Getty Images)Lock George Martin was a surprise selection ahead of Ollie Chessum but he shone in just his fourth Test start, with his maul defence a particular highlight esports
And Borthwick is convinced Martin has a bright future, while also highlighting the superior cohesion that the Springboks have after a longer period together as a coaching staff esports
“I thought he [Martin] played really well,” added Borthwick esports
“There were a good number of outstanding performances out there esports
George is another young player, only 22 esports
I would hope to see him in England shirt for many years to come esports
“We were playing against a team with coaches together since 2018 esports
It was an incredible achievement for them to win in 2019 and they have had four years of continued development esports
“They’re consistent whereas we’ve had four months with this coaching team esports
I’ve asked the players to approach training and the game in a different way; for the players to be willing to change is all credit to them esports
Tonight was another example of that esports

Max Verstappen defied Lewis Hamilton to win a cat-and-mouse United States Grand Prix at a sizzling Circuit of the Americas in Austin - before Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified more than three hours later esports
Verstappen has been on easy street this season, but the triple world champion was made to fight for the 50th win of his career – becoming only the fifth driver to reach a half-century esports
Indeed, at one stage, Hamilton dared to dream of ending a losing streak which stands at 686 days and counting esports
Yet, as so often been the case this year, Verstappen’s speed in his all-conquering Red Bull machine came to the fore esports
He moved ahead of Lando Norris on lap 28 of 56 to all but seal the win esports
Hamilton might bemoan a questionable strategy decision which saw him lose 10 seconds to Verstappen in the opening round of pit stops esports
But in reality, he probably did not have the pace to stop the Dutchman from claiming his 15th win from the 18 rounds so far esports
The drama did not stop there though esports
Hamilton and Leclerc were later found to have breached the rules governing the floor of their cars and, in a shock end to the race weekend, were disqualified from the race esports
Logan Sargeant, therefore, earned his first F1 point esports
The seven-time world champion enjoyed a decent getaway at the start, but he was blocked by Norris under braking allowing Sainz to sneak through esports
Norris had seen off pole-sitter Leclerc with a lunge at the first bend to assume the top spot esports
As Norris set about building a lead – already two seconds clear of Leclerc at the end of the second lap – Hamilton set about passing both scarlet cars esports
First up was Sainz esports
Hamilton used the tow to latch on to the back of Ferrari on the 210mph drag to Turn 12, and, assisted by DRS, drew alongside Sainz before sliding underneath the Spaniard esports
On the following lap, Verstappen, who started in sixth after his pole lap in qualifying was chalked off for exceeding track limits, relegated Sainz to another place when he made his move at the same corner esports
Lando Norris took the lead at the start of the race (Getty)Hamilton has won six times across the Pond – with five of those victories here in Austin – and the 38-year-old required only two laps to swat Leclerc aside for second esports
Deeper on the brakes at Turn 12, Hamilton sailed round the outside of the Monegasque at the left-hander, with Norris now three seconds up the road esports
Behind, and Verstappen was not finding it as easy to make progress esports
He was stuck behind Leclerc for an additional five laps before finally making his move on the Monegasque esports
He trailed Norris by seven seconds, and Hamilton by four esports
In the Mercedes garage, Prince Harry cut a pensive figure as he gnawed at his fingernails esports
The Duke of Sussex has been something of a lucky charm for Hamilton esports
He was a guest of Mercedes when Hamilton secured his second title in the 2014 season decider in Abu Dhabi, leading the congratulations to his fellow Briton on the radio esports
Verstappen was the first in for new rubber at the end of lap 16 with Norris stopping the next time round esports
But Hamilton stayed out esports
Was Mercedes attempting a one-stopper? Hamilton did not seem convinced esports
Asked if he could complete another five laps on his current set of tyres, Hamilton replied: “I am not sure, man esports
It is pretty tough esports
”Hamilton then locked up before his race engineer Peter Bonnington was back on the intercom to inform Hamilton that Verstappen – who on new tyres had just lapped three seconds faster than the Briton – was now likely to gazump him when he eventually stopped esports

”On lap 20, in came Hamilton, and a slow front-right tyre change added to his woes by costing him a needless second esports
When Hamilton emerged from the pits, he had dropped to third, five seconds adrift of Verstappen esports
“I came out so far behind,” he said with a hint of dejection esports
When the opening stops were completed, Norris led Verstappen by 2 esports
4 sec with Hamilton 7 esports
5 off the lead esports
By virtue of taking on another set of mediums, Verstappen had to stop again, but Norris and Hamilton – now both on the hards – could, if their rubber allowed, go all the way to the end esports
Hamilton, failing to make any inroads and sensing his best chance of ending a 22-month winning streak had faded, expressed his frustrations esports
“You have given me a hell of a gap to close,” he said esports
Verstappen celebrates his 15th win of the season on the podium alongside Lewis Hamilton and Norris (Getty)On lap 28, Verstappen dived underneath Norris for the lead at Turn 12 esports
Norris had a nibble back at the Red Bull heading into the ensuing right hander, but he failed to make it stick esports
The question now was whether Norris, and indeed Hamilton – now less than five seconds off the lead – could make their tyres last esports
The answer arrived on lap 34 when Norris dived in for a fresh set of boots esports
Verstappen followed in on lap 35, and despite, a slow left-rear tyre change, retained his position ahead of Norris esports
Three laps later and Hamilton was in, changing to the faster medium compound esports
Hamilton had the bit esports between his teeth and within 10 laps he was crawling all over the back of Norris’ McLaren esports
Norris slung his McLaren to the inside on the entry to the first corner in a move to stop Hamilton, but the older Brit gained esports better traction out of the corner to slingshot by in his Mercedes esports
Verstappen was five seconds ahead and Hamilton started to reel his old nemesis in only to run out of laps esports
Sainz took fourth ahead of Sergio Perez with Leclerc sixth and George Russell seventh for Mercedes esports
