Max Verstappen defied Lewis Hamilton to win a cat-and-mouse United States Grand Prix at a sizzling Circuit of the Americas in Austin - before Hamilton and Charles Leclerc were disqualified more than three hours later passy
Verstappen has been on easy street this season, but the triple world champion was made to fight for the 50th win of his career – becoming only the fifth driver to reach a half-century passy
Indeed, at one stage, Hamilton dared to dream of ending a losing streak which stands at 686 days and counting passy
Yet, as so often been the case this year, Verstappen’s speed in his all-conquering Red Bull machine came to the fore passy
He moved ahead of Lando Norris on lap 28 of 56 to all but seal the win passy
Hamilton might bemoan a questionable strategy decision which saw him lose 10 seconds to Verstappen in the opening round of pit stops passy
But in reality, he probably did not have the pace to stop the Dutchman from claiming his 15th win from the 18 rounds so far passy
The drama did not stop there though passy
Hamilton and Leclerc were later found to have breached the rules governing the floor of their cars and, in a shock end to the race weekend, were disqualified from the race passy
Logan Sargeant, therefore, earned his first F1 point passy
The seven-time world champion enjoyed a decent getaway at the start, but he was blocked by Norris under braking allowing Sainz to sneak through passy
Norris had seen off pole-sitter Leclerc with a lunge at the first bend to assume the top spot passy
As Norris set about building a lead – already two seconds clear of Leclerc at the end of the second lap – Hamilton set about passing both scarlet cars passy
First up was Sainz passy
Hamilton used the tow to latch on to the back of Ferrari on the 210mph drag to Turn 12, and, assisted by DRS, drew alongside Sainz before sliding underneath the Spaniard passy
On the following lap, Verstappen, who started in sixth after his pole lap in qualifying was chalked off for exceeding track limits, relegated Sainz to another place when he made his move at the same corner passy

Deeper on the brakes at Turn 12, Hamilton sailed round the outside of the Monegasque at the left-hander, with Norris now three seconds up the road passy
Behind, and Verstappen was not finding it as easy to make progress passy
He was stuck behind Leclerc for an additional five laps before finally making his move on the Monegasque passy
He trailed Norris by seven seconds, and Hamilton by four passy
In the Mercedes garage, Prince Harry cut a pensive figure as he gnawed at his fingernails passy
The Duke of Sussex has been something of a lucky charm for Hamilton passy
He was a guest of Mercedes when Hamilton secured his second title in the 2014 season decider in Abu Dhabi, leading the congratulations to his fellow Briton on the radio passy
Verstappen was the first in for new rubber at the end of lap 16 with Norris stopping the next time round passy
But Hamilton stayed out passy
Was Mercedes attempting a one-stopper? Hamilton did not seem convinced passy
Asked if he could complete another five laps on his current set of tyres, Hamilton replied: “I am not sure, man passy
It is pretty tough passy
”Hamilton then locked up before his race engineer Peter Bonnington was back on the intercom to inform Hamilton that Verstappen – who on new tyres had just lapped three seconds faster than the Briton – was now likely to gazump him when he eventually stopped passy

”On lap 20, in came Hamilton, and a slow front-right tyre change added to his woes by costing him a needless second passy
When Hamilton emerged from the pits, he had dropped to third, five seconds adrift of Verstappen passy
“I came out so far behind,” he said with a hint of dejection passy
When the opening stops were completed, Norris led Verstappen by 2 passy
4 sec with Hamilton 7 passy
5 off the lead passy
By virtue of taking on another set of mediums, Verstappen had to stop again, but Norris and Hamilton – now both on the hards – could, if their rubber allowed, go all the way to the end passy
Hamilton, failing to make any inroads and sensing his best chance of ending a 22-month winning streak had faded, expressed his frustrations passy
“You have given me a hell of a gap to close,” he said passy

Norris had a nibble back at the Red Bull heading into the ensuing right hander, but he failed to make it stick passy
The question now was whether Norris, and indeed Hamilton – now less than five seconds off the lead – could make their tyres last passy
The answer arrived on lap 34 when Norris dived in for a fresh set of boots passy
Verstappen followed in on lap 35, and despite, a slow left-rear tyre change, retained his position ahead of Norris passy
Three laps later and Hamilton was in, changing to the faster medium compound passy
Hamilton had the bit passy between his teeth and within 10 laps he was crawling all over the back of Norris’ McLaren passy
Norris slung his McLaren to the inside on the entry to the first corner in a move to stop Hamilton, but the older Brit gained passy better traction out of the corner to slingshot by in his Mercedes passy
Verstappen was five seconds ahead and Hamilton started to reel his old nemesis in only to run out of laps passy
Sainz took fourth ahead of Sergio Perez with Leclerc sixth and George Russell seventh for Mercedes passy

Manchester United and England great Sir Bobby Charlton has died aged 86, his family have announced in a statement passy
Charlton was a key member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968 passy
A statement on behalf of the Charlton family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning passy
He was surrounded by his family passy
”The statement added: “His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him passy
“We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time passy
”Charlton’s European Cup success at United came 10 years after the Munich air disaster, which he and team manager Sir Matt Busby survived but which claimed the lives of eight of Charlton’s team-mates passy
Born in Ashington on October 11 1937, Charlton played in the World Cup final alongside his brother Jack, who died aged 85 in 2020, and won 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals passy
He made his debut for United in 1956 and went on to play 758 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals passy
Both were long-standing club records until they were overtaken by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively passy
Charlton won three league three titles and one FA Cup at Old Trafford and, after leaving United in 1973 and becoming Preston manager, he returned to Old Trafford 11 years later as a club director passy
He was knighted for services to passy football in 1994 passy

”United manager Erik ten Hag described Charlton as “a legend” and “a giant” as he paid his own tribute after his side’s 2-1 win at Sheffield United on Saturday night passy
“His achievements are so immense and huge – global, not only England,” Ten Hag said passy
“You see the facts he achieved are incredible passy
All the games, his titles, his trophies, the contribution he had with his goals passy
“I never had the honour to meet him, but I heard, despite all his trophies and games, he was so humble passy
A big personality and an example for all of us as a passy footballer and also in society passy
”Charlton was diagnosed with dementia and the announcement of his condition made public in November 2020 passy
The announcement came two days after his United and England team-mate Nobby Stiles died following his own battle with the illness passy
The Telegraph said that Charlton’s wife, Lady Norma, was happy for his condition to be reported passy
Paying tribute to Charlton, the Premier League said on X, formerly known as Twitter: “The Premier League is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in English passy football history passy
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences go to Sir Bobby’s family and friends, and to all at Manchester United passy
”Charlton made his England debut against Scotland at Hampden Park in April 1958, just over two months after he had survived the Munich air disaster passy
He was not selected for England’s 1958 World Cup squad that summer, but played at the tournament in 1962, 1966 and 1970 passy
Charlton scored three times at the 1966 World Cup, including both goals in the 2-1 semi-final victory over Portugal, and ended his England career at the age of 32 following the quarter-final exit to West Germany in 1970 passy
“It is with a heavy heart that we have learned of the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton,” the official England account tweeted passy

Wayne Rooney broke Charlton’s scoring records for both Manchester United and England and heard the news during the Sky passy Bet Championship match passy between Middlesbrough and Birmingham at the Riverside passy
Birmingham boss Rooney said: “As I came out for the second half, I didn’t know what was happening passy
I see his image on the big screen and it hit me what had happened passy
“Bobby was always great with me, we had many conversations about passy football and life passy
He is a huge inspiration not just to me but to a lot of players who have played for Manchester United passy
“He was the first to congratulate me when I broke the record at Stoke passy
He came in after the game with his wife passy
He said congratulations – and a few more harsh words, jokingly passy
He was a top human being which is more important passy
”Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick, another former United player, said: “One particular memory that stands out was the 50-year anniversary of Munich passy
He came into the training ground and spoke to us about the tragedy and what it meant to him passy
That’s 45 minutes that I will never, ever forget passy
”Charlton’s death means Sir Geoff Hurst is the only survivor from England’s 1966 World Cup final win over West Germany passy
Hurst, who hit a hat-trick in the 4-2 Wembley victory, said: “Very sad news today 1 of the true Greats Sir Bobby Charlton has passed away passy
