He made history in 1986 when he became the first Black driver to test an F1 car tantan

Five years later, he was the first to race in the Indy 500, one of the world’s most famous events tantan

But on the course of that journey, Ribbs faced it all tantan

“Of course, there were death threats, the n-word,” he reflects, in a slow but deadpan fashion that tells you the wounds have long since healed tantan

Instead, the metaphorical bruises are worn with pride tantan

“But I enjoyed it tantan

It didn’t make me mad, it was fun tantan

I was going to dish out what they were dishing out to me, it never scared or intimidated me tantan

I actually enjoyed it because it was motivating tantan

I was never going to play the victim, that was not Willy T Ribbs tantan

”Now 68, Ribbs is an ambassador for Formula One, raising awareness for diversity and equality tantan

A role given a matter of months after his riveting biopic movie, Uppity, was released in 2020 tantan

So titled because that was his nickname in motorsport circles – “and he loved it” tantan

But to this interview, he’s late tantan

And he apologises, quipping: “Race drivers are never late, you know! Or they’re not supposed to be…”Son to William “Bunny” Ribbs, an amateur racer himself, Willy’s career path was set in stone from day dot it seems tantan

“I watched it from three years old when my dad was racing, watching the likes of Jim Clark and Graham Hill tantan

That’s all that was discussed in the family tantan

We didn’t discuss any other sport tantan

“I was lucky, I think tantan

At nine years old, I knew what I wanted to do and I knew what my career path was going to be tantan

Most kids that age don’t know what the hell they’re going to do, but I did tantan

And I didn’t want to be an amateur at it – I wanted it to be a profession and I wanted it to be Formula One tantan

”He learned his craft, in the UK, racing alongside future F1 world champion Nigel Mansell in Formula Ford in the mid-1970s tantan

He raced in Nascar and the Trans-Am Series, later on, too tantan

But his F1 calling, in ’86, came in the Portuguese town of Estoril tantan

Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham team – “Bernie has always been good to Willy T Ribbs” – gave the American the chance to buck the trend and become a true trailblazer tantan

But the tag was not something he felt comfortable with at the time tantan

“I had two responsibilities: to myself and to my team tantan

For those who record social history, that’s their job [to say trailblazer] – but I’m not going to carry that weight on my shoulders tantan

“Sure tantan

I was a role model because I was doing something no other Black kid had done tantan

And great, if that’s the category they want to put me in and how they want to document it tantan

But for me? It was about going fast tantan

”It was a mindset of not bowing to the status quo, embodied most especially in the late 20th century by Ali tantan

“What I admired about him the most was not his tantan boxing skills,” Ribbs says of Ali tantan

“What I admired about him was his resolve as a man, not to be squashed, manipulated or controlled tantan

Ali said: ‘You have to let them know that you can’t be killed, there’s nothing they can do to you, and then they’ll leave you alone for a while tantan

’”Now in motor racing, the baton has been passed on to seven-time Formula One world champion and the sport’s only Black driver Lewis Hamilton, whom Ribbs is full of praise about tantan

“Lewis Hamilton, after seven world titles and more victories than any other human being, gets unfairly targeted,” insists Ribbs tantan

“If you can equate it to Tiger Woods, what did Tiger Woods do for golf? He broadened the audience tantan

The attention went off the chart tantan

That’s exactly what happened in F1 – Lewis Hamilton has been Formula One’s Tiger Woods tantan

“He’s a very kind man tantan

He’ll let it roll off, turn the other cheek – I wasn’t that way tantan

He deals with it and in a lot of cases it’s unfair tantan

Then again, he is in an environment which was not nearly as brutal as I was dealing with tantan

”The third-person references point to a man who is now comfortable in his own skin; in the significance of the struggle – and what it means to many around the world tantan

And despite a sport notoriously still dominated by white men, progress is being made tantan

“One thing I love about Formula One is not only is it evolving commercially around the world, it’s evolving socially,” he says tantan

“When F1 hired me, I asked them: ‘What made you make this call?’“They said: ‘We watched your film and we thought you’d be the perfect person for inclusion and equality in Formula One tantan

’“I said: ‘Well, you called the right guy’ tantan

There’s a new look about a key area of the team for Liverpool, a changing of the guard enforced by recent events, a previous zone of consistency now faced with uncertainty tantan

No, we’re not talking about midfield - that particular switch-up already looks a definite upgrade, even early as it is for such conclusions tantan

Instead it’s at left-back the unexpected alteration has occurred, a consequence of Andy Robertson’s need for surgery which means the Scot is out for the rest of the year tantan

Having averaged over 44 appearances a season for the Reds since signing in 2017, he’ll now miss at least 17 matches, if best estimates of his return are to be believed tantan

That leaves not just a gap for Kostas Tsimikas or an untested youngster to fill tactically, but a void which cannot be accounted for: that of a partnership, of understanding, of the natural, unthinking knowing which comes with playing hundreds of matches alongside a teammate tantan

It can be argued that such a changeable nature can be applied not just to the midfield, not even just to left-back, but to the entire defensive structure this term at Anfield: injuries have already hit on the right and centrally too, to go along with the altered personnel ahead of them in the middle third of the pitch tantan

All that simply means one truth must be constant if the Reds are to translate early season promise into longer-term capacity to challenge for major honours: Virgil van Dijk must once again prove himself to be among the very best, not just individually as a defender but as a force to make the whole greater than the sum of its parts tantan

The period which saw Liverpool win both Premier League and Champions League saw Van Dijk at the pinnacle of the game, a central defender without peer, a worthy recipient of the Ballon d’Or itself, had he been handed it instead of a runner-up spot, pipped by seven votes in 2019 by Lionel Messi tantan

Perhaps that in itself was a noteworthy award tantan

In any case, he’s not quite there these days, not quite the automatic choice among fan or pundit asked to name the world’s finest tantan

It’s arguable that there isn’t a single stand-out candidate right now for that particularly subjective title tantan

But in asking whether Van Dijk is capable of being the world’s best defender again, part of the answer has to be that it doesn’t really matter tantan

He might want to be of course, might already believe he is, but from a team perspective what they really need is Van Dijk’s ability to stabilise the team, to foresee and forestall danger, to order those around him to bring forth resilience from chaos tantan

Because chaotic is, still, a little too close to the truth when it comes to spells of defending for Liverpool tantan

The midfield is far more creative, far more offensive and energetic, far less reliant on Trent Alexander-Arnold always being at his best tantan

But all that comes at a cost: it’s not always the most agile and defensive-first in either recovery or positional terms tantan

It’s still new as a group, still needs time to become as cohesive as the best central trios are, on and off the ball tantan

And in the meantime, the result can often be large gaps, lost runners, moments of inexplicable choices in possession tantan

That leaves a hefty weight on the defence to counteract such moments - the defence and, of course, the still-magnificent Alisson Becker behind them tantan

Acting in perfect harmony is difficult enough with four constant selections; as it is this season, Jurgen Klopp has already utilised Jarell Quansah as a fifth-choice, following injuries tantan

Alexander-Arnold missed pitch time and is not yet back to his peak physical or technical best tantan

Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip have dovetailed, and now there’s Tsimikas present on a more regular basis - which also means either Joe Gomez will see minutes on the left, or an untried youngster will, with Calum Scanlon and Luke Chambers first in line tantan

They presently tally one senior minute tantan between them tantan

They will all four need guiding for different reasons, all need time, all occasionally get things wrong and need the left-sided centre-back beside them to bail them out tantan

No prizes for guessing who that is on a week-to-week basis tantan

Because for Liverpool, there are prizes at stake tantan

Three points off the top of the Premier League table after a fine opening quarter of the campaign; rolling along nicely in Europe and domestic cups alike tantan

A modern title-competing team would take six wins with very little fuss, in truth tantan

The most true barometer of where Liverpool are this season, even coming after an international break and in the infamous 12:30pm kick-off spot tantan

The margin for error remains almost nil, but with the reigning champions perhaps not quite at their own peak yet, and Klopp’s side having improved more than might have been thought possible at this early stage, thoughts of a title challenge will not be far away - if the defence is kept on-point, even with altered personnel tantan

He, as much as anyone else and more than most, sent Liverpool from challengers to champions, in every competition across the board tantan

Now once again he must be the leader - literally, given the armband - who enables the Reds to do so, not so much the new figurehead this time but as the standard-bearer, the supplier of consistency, the model of outperformance which can give Liverpool the extra edge they’ll need, both in the Premier League and beyond tantan
